INTERVIEW: “FUTURES LOST” IS JUST THE BEGINNING FOR DON’T GET LEMON

We wanted to stick out.
— DON'T GET LEMON

At first listen, you’d never suspect that post-punk trio Don’t Get Lemon are from Texas. They sound like they could be a British new wave band straight from the 80’s. Then again, there’s something undeniably modern about their sound, even if they do add a playful dash of disco into the mix.

Don’t Get Lemon just released a new single “Futures Lost,” which will make you tap your toes and hit the Repeat button before it’s finished.

DarknessCalling.net was lucky enough to chat with the rising band on the eve of their single’s release. Read on to learn more.

DARKNESS CALLING: We love your new track "Futures Lost." Has this song been in the works for awhile? Curious if it was written since the pandemic began, or if the pandemic shaped it in any way.

DON’T GET LEMON: You could say “Futures Lost” is the first song we wrote during lockdown, sending concepts back and forth on Facebook Messenger. Our initial plan for this spring was to record two songs in March, but we ended up pushing our studio time back to June. Our producer and studio, R.N. at Cloudland Studios in Ft. Worth, was gracious enough to carry over the deposit. We then decided to make the most of the delay and used the extra three months to write three more songs to record. I guess if there’s a silver lining for us, it’s that we got to create a more complete piece of music.

DARKNESS CALLING: It looks like you have been releasing singles since last year, with an EP (Grey Beach) released in 2019, as well. Is "Futures Lost" the first hint at a full album, or is it too early to tell?

DON’T GET LEMON: “Futures Lost” will be the first single on our upcoming 5-song EP, Forward Not Forgetting. That will be out October 6th. With that being said, we plan on having a quick turnaround once the EP is out and start working on writing our debut full-length, which may or may not already be in progress.

...music that is energetic and summery, paired with grim or hopeless lyrics.

DARKNESS CALLING: How did you approach this song from a production point-of-view? What inspired you when making “Futures Lost”?

DON’T GET LEMON: We enjoy experimenting with the dynamic created between music that is energetic and summery, paired with grim or hopeless lyrics. Some of our musical influences come from countries that often romanticize “paradise” as a way of coping with their own climate and desolate landscapes. This led to us wanting to incorporate more “tropical” elements into Don’t Get Lemon to further create the dualities we look for. We felt this song had a nice opening for steel drums and bongos to help reach that tonal escape.

DARKNESS CALLING: What can you tell us about the origins of Don't Get Lemon? How did you three get together and decide on this wacky band name?

DON’T GET LEMON: We initially were into just calling ourselves Lemon, but we soon found that it may be hard to find our stuff in the sea of artists that already had that moniker. We wanted to stick out, so we expanded the idea into Don’t Get Lemon, which is from a line in the film The Football Factory. It’s a phrase in cockney rhyming slang meaning, “Don’t get smart.”

[Editor’s note: Bollocks! Should have looked that one up.]

DARKNESS CALLING: What else is in your future? Are there any side projects or livestreams that our readers should be aware of?

DON’T GET LEMON: A livestream sounds like a lot of fun. Aside from hunkering down and continuing to write, we plan on getting some shirts together soon that will be posted alongside our DGL flags on our Bandcamp.
