INTERVIEW: ‘TERROR FORMS’ SHEDS LIGHT ON THE STUNNING NEW VIDEO FOR “OPAQUE”

Some time had passed since our last video, and we wanted to try something different for the next one.
— TERROR FORMS

The northeastern synthwave duo known as Terror Forms was one of the best discoveries that we made when curating the first-ever Darkness Calling playlist. The song “Opaque” was too good to ignore — a pulsing, resonating track that was simultaneously beautiful and unsettling, dance-y and dissonant.

Pari and Ryan, the mysterious masterminds behind Terror Forms, were kind enough to chat with us about their new video for “Opaque,” which was just released today.

Watch below, then keep reading to learn more about this visually-stunning video.

DARKNESS CALLING: We featured “Opaque” on our very first playlist. We loved it then and we love it now. Can you shed some light on the writing and production of this song, or any personal experiences that may have shaped it?

TERROR FORMS: We had an idea to use different synthesizer patches at each show we played. With Pari on the keyboard, we came up with a melody, and after turning some knobs and moving some faders, a new song came out of it.

DARKNESS CALLING: What led to the decision to make an “Opaque” video, and what can you tell us about its production? Despite being a simple concept, the video is very well-made and polished. We loved watching it.

TERROR FORMS: “Opaque” was our newest song. Some time had passed since our last video, and we wanted to try something different for the next one. We were inspired by a gif of a xenomorph, switching black to white, and Ryan came up with an idea to film in monochrome using both white clothes on a black backdrop, then vice versa, black-on-white. We had a shotlist and made sure each shot had both positive and negative versions. Despite the set’s appearance in the video, it was actually filmed in Pari’s garage.

DARKNESS CALLING: What can you tell us about the future for Terror Forms?

TERROR FORMS: We have a virtual show lined up for Thursday 9/24 at 8PM EST: Dark Spring Boston’s Unveiling the Northeast, featuring two new songs to be released on an EP in November. Right now, we’re very DIY and handle most of the production on our own, but we’re currently looking for a record label to help with exposure, production, and potentially to release the EP.
