REVIEW: MORE — PROVOKED BY MOTIONS

Swedish synth group MORE are no strangers to Darkness Calling. Their brand-new single “Provoked by Motions” can now be heard on the Darkness Calling Spotify playlist, and it’s a track that you won’t want to miss. Alternatively, you can listen for free via the Bandcamp player below. As always, we strongly encourage you to support the band by purchasing their music directly.

What makes “Provoked by Motions” particularly interesting is that it represents somewhat of a turning point for this fledgling synthpop group. Between its minimalist, black cover art and brooding sonic palette, it seems that MORE might be moving into darker territory for their second release, and I couldn’t be more excited.

If you enjoyed “Sentimental Sounds” but found the rest of their debut album to be a little too bright and shiny, this new track will prove to be a welcome change of pace. Sitting at a tight 3:21 with not a second wasted, “Provoked by Motions” is a confident, sinewy little track that oozes Depeche Mode Violator-era sexiness.

The drum programming on this track deserves extra praise, as does the little synth that creeps in around the 1:28 mark. It’s easy to imagine a version of this song that lasts 5 or 6 minutes and really allows itself to dwell in the dark spots. As it stands, “Provoked by Motions” is very economical with its time and instead attempts to make the largest possible impact with its traditional 3 minute radio-friendly length.

On the one hand, this is a completely understandable and commendable approach. On the other hand, part of me wishes it were a bit longer, if only to allow the emotion of the song to really nestle in. While it isn’t advertised as such, “Provoked by Motions” feels like it could be a radio edit of the real thing. Perhaps the non-single tracks on MORE’s upcoming release will allow more time for reflection.

But even this criticism reveals another compliment, in a way. Ultimately, I’m saying that I wish this track were longer because it’s good and I don’t want it to end.
